This year, Halloween lands on Friday, October 31, and at Hout Bay International School (HBIS), we’re gearing up for an unforgettable, spooky celebration! We invite all students to show off their creativity by dressing up in their most imaginative costumes and joining us for a day packed with fun, fright, and fundraising.
Every year, our school community comes together for this special occasion not only for the joy of Halloween but also to support a vital cause. This year, we ask for a contribution of R50 per child, which will help raise essential funds for our bursary students at CHELO.

What is CHELO?
CHELO (Child Education and Learning Organisation) is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) founded in 2007 by a group of dedicated parents in collaboration with HBIS. CHELO is recognised as a B-BBEE Level 1 organisation. Its mission is clear: to provide financial support to students who might not have the means to attend our school.
At HBIS, we strongly believe that every child should have access to quality education. CHELO plays a key role in making this vision a reality. While HBIS contributes to the school fees, CHELO helps with all other direct costs for our bursary students, covering expenses that can quickly add up—like textbooks, uniforms, and even extracurricular activities. Currently, CHELO supports 13 students across all year groups, from Primary Years 1 (PYP1) to the final year of high school.
Why Your Contribution Matters
Education costs can be daunting, particularly for families facing financial difficulties. CHELO’s efforts are crucial in ensuring that these students receive the support they need to succeed both academically and socially. Without ongoing fundraising and the generous contributions of our parents and community members, this support is at risk.
By joining the Halloween Dress Up event, you’re not just celebrating the season—you're making a real difference in the lives of our bursary students. Your R50 donation will directly assist in vital costs that help these children thrive in their educational journey.
For instance, with just 20 participants donating, we could raise R1,000, significantly impacting the daily lives of our bursary students. This amount can cover a month’s worth of school supplies for several children.
Join the Fun!
On October 31, we invite all students to come dressed in their spookiest, silliest, or most creative costumes. Whether you want to be a ghoul, a superhero, or something completely unique, the main goal is to enjoy yourselves while supporting a fantastic cause.
Throughout the day, we will host various activities including a costume parade, games, and sweet treats. Each event allows students to connect with peers, express their creativity, and learn about the meaningful impact of their contributions.
How to Participate
Participation in this year’s Halloween Dress Up event is easy! Simply buy a ticket for R50 per child. You can purchase tickets through the school office or online. Every ticket not only grants access to the festivities but also supports our bursary students.
This is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to have conversations with their children about the importance of community support. Discuss how acts of kindness, no matter how small, contribute to collective success.
A Call to Action
As Halloween approaches, let’s unite as a community to ensure this event is a resounding success. The more participants we have, the greater our impact will be. Encourage your friends and family to join in and support CHELO.
Every little contribution counts. Your participation can genuinely change lives. Let’s make this Halloween a celebration of fun and generosity, supporting those who need it most.
The Spirit of Giving
This Halloween, let’s embrace the joy of giving along with the thrills of the season. The Halloween Dress Up event at HBIS is more than just costumes; it's an opportunity to band together as a community and support our bursary students through CHELO.
Mark your calendars for October 31 and get ready for an exciting day full of fun, laughter, and the joy of giving. Together, we can have a positive impact on our students' lives, ensuring that every child has the chance to shine.
We look forward to seeing all the fantastic costumes on October 31! Your support is invaluable.
