Chelo welcomes new committee members

The Children of Hout Bay Education and Learning Opportunity (Chelo) has welcomed 3 new faces to their dynamic team of volunteers.

CHELO Chair Karin Kanewske Turner

Karin Kanewske Turner
is Chelo’s new Chairperson.

Karin directs a non-profit public health project in South Africa and across the globe. Having worked for over 20 years in international health and social welfare programs, Karin has a passion for uplifting individuals and serving communities. Her son Chet is in the MYP programme.

CHELO Secretary Scott Birnie

Scott Birnie assumes the role of
Chelo Secretary.

He has spent most of his career working in Finance in the Oil & Gas industry but recently moved to the non-profit sector. His step-son is in the MYP programme.

Jan Weintrob steps into the role of
Marketing Coordinator.

Jan has a background in journalism and many years of experience in media communication and fundraising for universities. Her step-son is completing IGCSE2 and about to enter the DP programme.

Chelo’s mission is to facilitate the inclusion of students from previously disadvantaged communities of Hout Bay into the school by providing sustainable financial, social and educational support.

The CHELO committee consists of volunteers who serve in all areas from office bearers to mentors of the bursary families. There are currently 10 students (from PYP1 through to IGCSE 1) enrolled at HBIS supported by the CHELO programme. If you would like more information please go to www.chelo.org.za
