About Us
chelo is the Bursary Programme facilitated by Hout Bay International School (HBIS).
This bursary programme was conceptualized in 2007 by a group of parents who were driven by a desire for their children to be educated in a more racially and culturally diverse environment. Besides that, they were mindful of their responsibility to help provide children from previously disadvantaged communities in Hout Bay with a world class education.
Using research conducted at other schools (Ambleside, Kronendal, The German School, St Cyprians, Bridge House) where a bursary program was already in place, a suitable model for HBIS was created.
A bursary committee comprising parents, someone from the local community, the Principal and Vice-Principal was formed and a sub-committee became responsible for fundraising for the program. The current committee consists of volunteers who serve in all areas from office bearers to mentors of the bursary families along with the crucial link to HBIS in terms of academics and the school ethos and vision, via the Principal and Vice-Principals.
chelo offers the bursary students at HBIS mentorship, textbooks, extra murals, stationery, school uniforms, homework support, workshops, school camps etc. along with social and emotional support. When applicable the entrance fee for university is also included as part of the program.
Much of the finance required to run the programme is raised through adhoc donations and from the fundraising events chelo holds during the school year.
chelo is an officially registered NPO with tax exemption and donor tax exemption. We are rated BBBEE-1.
